Sister Doris Kathleen Baker as Matron of the Mackay Hospital
Title Sister Doris Kathleen Baker as Matron of the Mackay Hospital
Description Sister Doris Kathleen Baker completed her general nursing course at the Rockhampton Hospital between 14 Jul 1936 and Jul 1940. She also completed her midwifery qualification at the Lady Goodwin Hospital between 04 Aug 1940 and 04 Feb 1941. We are reliant on the Australian electoral rolls for some of our information about her career. In 1943, she was a nurse at the Mount Isa Hospital. The 1949, 1954, 1958, 1963 and 1968 rolls place her at the Mackay District Hospital. We know that she served as Matron of the Mackay Hospital from 1963 to 1969. This photograph shows her at her desk at the hospital. From Mackay she moved to Hervey Bay and worked at the Sir Leslie Wilson Bush Children's Home for 18 months. It appears that she then settled in Maryborough because the 1972 and 1980 rolls she describes herself as a nurse in Maryborough.
