Title | Matron Mary Jane Hood, Rockhampton Hospital, 1895 |
Description | Mary Jane Hood (centre) was the first trained nurse in Central Queensland, having completed her training at the Port Curtis & Leichhardt District Hospital in 1888. She became Matron of the Hospital in April 1888, holding the position until 1906 when she travelled to New Zealand to further develop a distinguished career. This photograph was published on 4 May 1895 as part of a feature in the Sydney Mail and New South Wales Advertiser. The article referred to “Miss M. J. Hood, the kind and patient matron”. The other nurses were not identified. However, from records held by the Country Hospital Museum, other nurses likely to have been at the hospital at the time were Florence Haylock, Annie Brizzel and Caroline Campbell because these were the next three nurses to qualify by 1898. |
