Description | Modest decorations are features in this ward at the Rockhampton Hospital at Christmas ca. 1930. The ward is Nightingale style with beds in rows, each equipped with mosquito nets. As well as images of 7 nurses, close examination shows patients in a number of beds and one standing at centre rear. In earlier times, patients were in hospital for longer periods than they are now and the nurses lived in quarters at the hospital. In the 1930s. Christmas was marked by competitions for the best decorated wards and Hospitals Board members and senior staff usually visited the hospitals on Christmas. Santa Clause distributed gifts to children. |
