Title | Christmas decorations in the Port Curtis and Leichhardt Districts Hospital ca. 1891 |
Description | This scene taken in a ward at the Port Curtis and Leichhardt Districts Hospital ca. 1891 shows nurses in a ward decorated for Christmas. The practice of decorating wards for Christmas was a long-standing one at Hospitals when nurses lived in and patients often spent extended periods in hospital. The Morning Bulletin in its Christmas report on 28th January noted that “Some little attempt was was made at decoration, but only at the Port Curtis and Leichhardt Districts Hospital was it carried out to any great extent. That institution presented quite a smart appearance everywhere, what with the flag«, flowers, and greenery hung about in the verandahs, over the doorways, and in the wards.” |
