Matron Norma West Rockhampton Hospital ca. 1980
Title Matron Norma West Rockhampton Hospital ca. 1980
Description Miss Norma West OBE held the senior nursing position at the Rockhampton Hospital from 19 July 1971 until 2001. Initially the position carried the title Matron but subsequent changes led to the position being titled Nursing Superintendent for a few years and then Director of Nursing. She was awarded the OBE in 1983 for her service to nursing. Norma had undertaken her initial training at the Bundaberg Hospital. She then trained in midwifery at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Hobart. After working for a period in Adelaide she returned to her home town, Proserpine. She next went to the Monto Hospital where she was promoted to Matron after a couple of years. A period of training in maternal and child welfare in Brisbane followed before spending time working in clinics based in Mackay and Mt Isa which also serviced smaller towns. The opportunity to become Matron of the Longreach Hospital followed before the final career move to Rockhampton. Matron West is wearing the Baxter style paper veil which replaced the traditional starched organdie veil in the late 1960s.
