Title | Rockhampton Nurse of the Year contest 1974 |
Description | The photograph shows the 'Nurse of the Year' float in the 1974 Capricana Parade in Rockhampton. In the 1970s, Nurse of the Year quests were held annually as a means of raising funds for charitable causes such as cancer research. The 1974 winner was Sister Janice Young. She is seen here riding on the elaborate float depicted as Florence Nightingale complete with lamp. Walking at the left is Sister Eve Hood playing the role of Sari Gamp, a caricature of a nurse before the Nightingale era who featured in the writings of Charles Dickens. The modern nurse walking on the right of the float is unidentified. Sister Young went on to win 'Nurse of the Year' in the Queensland Cancer Quest state finals having raised $8,000 for the Queensland Cancer Fund. |
