Description | Rosa Annie (Rose) Christmas was the fifth to train at the Rockhampton Hospital. She commenced on 11 July 1897 and completed her training in June 1900. Her hospital certificate was signed on 04 January 1901. From February 1901, she held the position of Charge Nurse until being appointed Head Nurse in December 1904. After the resignation of Matron Mary Jane Hood who had been the first nurse to train at the hospital and in Queensland, the Hospital Committee appointed Miss Christmas to the position of Matron on 08 November 1906. The newly-formed Nurses' Registration Board issued her a Certificate of Registration as a General Nurse on 26 March 1913. Miss Christmas resigned as Matron in October 1919 to marry a widower, William Hastie Kennedy, a merchant mariner who was captain of a coastal vessel. In recognition of her 22 years of outstanding service, the Hospital Committee presented her with a silver service with the plate inscribed with a message of appreciation and the names of all members of the Committee. |
