Title Queensland Governor Lord Lamington visits first Mount Morgan Hospital 5th June 1896
Description The photograph shows Lord Lamington (1860-1940) (front row centre), Governor of Queensland, on a visit to the Mount Morgan Hospital on 5th June 1896, 6 years after the hospital was opened. The photograph is from the Capricornia CQ Collection. The photograph shown here has been digitally restored, labelled and captioned by Catherine McIntosh, who is the great-granddaughter of Mount Morgan resident and musician, Thomas Upsell Stubbs (1868-1954). Others present in the photograph are hospital staff and members of the Mount Morgan Hospital Committee. Thomas Glen Cornes (1842-1903) is in the second front row, 3rd from the right. He was the President of the Hospital Committee. He had designed and built the hospital in 1889-1890 in his role as superintendent of sawmills and carpenters of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company Limited. Mr Cornes was also responsible for the construction of the original buildings at the Mount Morgan gold mine in the 1880s. Catherine McIntosh has also been able to identify Mr Cornes' eldest son, Thomas Thompson Cornes (1872-1933), standing to his father's right. He was a member of the Hospital Committee at this time. In the right hand side of the second back row is another Hospital Committee member, Jens Hansen Lundager (1853-1930). He was a renowned photographer who has a very large collection of his photographs in the Queensland State Library. Second from the left in the second row is James Bryce Begg (1862-1922), a Mount Morgan Undertaker who, in the early 1900s, sold his business to Thomas Thompson Cornes who has already been identified in the centre of the second row. Based on a 1905 hospital photo which was labelled with staff names, Catherine has also identified the hospital's dispenser, George Howard at the far left of the 4th row and Nurse Blythman in the centre of the 4th row. Nurse Blythman was an original nurse at the hospital. She can be seen in the 1890 photograph of the official opening of the Mount Morgan Hospital in the front row, sixth from the right. The 1890 photograph is displayed on our website.
