Title | Rockhampton Hospital fund-raising fete 23rd October 1915 |
Description | Hospitals in the early 20th century were heavily dependent on community fund-raising to enable them to operate. Fetes were one such fund-raising activity. This fete in aid of the Rockhampton General Hospital was held on October 23rd 1915 at Victoria Park adjacent to the Fitzroy River. According to the newspaper reports of the event, Sweet Stall No. 2 was run by Mesdames T. W. Kingel (wife of the Mayor) and F. Lomas. While we cannot be certain, it is likely that these are the two ladies in the photograph, with Mrs Kingel on the right. A very full account of the fete may be found on Trove at: http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/53416578. |
