Title | Sister Editha Haynes with Rockhampton Hospital Nurses at the Rockhampton Show ca. 1960 |
Description | Sister Editha Haynes with a group of Rockhampton Hospital nurses in the Rockhampton Showground ca. 1960. During the 1950s and 1960s nurses visited the Rockhampton Show to raise funds for the Centaur Memorial Fund. The fund had been set up to honour those who died when the Centaur, a World War 2 hospital ship, was torpedoed off the South Queensland coast by a Japanese submarine on 14 May 1943. Only 64 of the 332 people on board survived. The fund was used to provide scholarships to Queensland nurses to assist with their training. Sister Haynes was a Tutor Sister responsible for training nurses at the hospital. |
