Description | Nurse Rowena (Rene) Gordon, Rockhampton, ca., 1918. Nurses photographs were often shared in a postcard format produced by studios. This one has the watermark “Murrays Rockhampton”. Rene was appointed to the staff of the Rockhampton Hospital on 30th August 1918. In mid-1919 she made the fateful decision to take a trip on a Government steamer, the SS Llewellyn, to visit friends in the Bowen area. The ship was lost in heavy seas near St Bees Island east of Mackay on 17th July 1919. None of the 14 people aboard was every found, though a nightdress labelled R. Gordon was retrieved by searching ships. |
