Description Rosa Annie (Rose) Christmas is listed in the Rockhampton Hospital's Register Books as the fifth nurse to train at the hospital. She commenced on 11 Jun 1897 and completed her training in Jun 1900. Her hospital certificate was signed on 04 Jan 1901. From Feb 1901 she held the position of Charge Nurse until being appointed Head Nurse in Dec 1904. After the resignation of Matron Mary Jane Hood who was the first nurse to train at the hospital, the Hospital Committee appointed Miss Christmas to the position of Matron on 08 Nov 1906. The newly-formed Nurses' Registration Board issued her a Certificate of Registration as a General Nurse on 26 Mar 1913. Miss Christmas resigned as Matron in Oct 1919 to marry a widower, William Hastie Kennedy, a merchant mariner who was captain of a coastal vessel. This photograph was donated by the family. The annotation on the back of the photograph reads 'Grandma Kennedy when Matron of Rockhampton Hospital. Rose Annie Christmas.'
