Description | Grace Enid Brown was born in Queensland on 14 Oct 1909. Her family lived at Calliope, near Gladstone, and she completed her nurse training at the Rockhampton Hospital between 27 Feb 1930 and Mar 1934. She was Matron of the Sunnyside Maternity Hospital at Coffs Harbour, NSW, from August 1952 to March 1963 when she transferred to the new maternity wing at the general hospital. She retired in 1974 aged 65 but continued to do part-time work and continued her contribution to the Hospital Auxiliary. As Grace Enid de Satgé, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) on 06 Jun 1978 for service to nursing. She died in Coffs Harbour on 21 Nov 2005. In this photograph published in the Coffs Harbour newspaper in early 1986, Grace is wearing the insignia of the Medal of the Order of Australia, a badge which reads 'United Hospital Auxiliaries of NSW - For Service - Coffs Harbour' and the badge of the Nurses and Masseurs Registration Board of Queensland. |
