Description The photograph shows Sister Gladys Mary Murphy (married name Pidgeon) who was a Sister in the Australian Army Nursing Service in World War 2. There is a handwritten greeting at the bottom right of the photo which reads “To Elsie, Jack & Family With Best Wishes. Gladys”. On this version of the photo other names are incomplete in this scan. Gladys commenced her nursing studies at the Rockhampton Hospital on 15 Jan 1935 and completed her general nurse training in early 1939. She then completed a midwifery certificate between 04 Apr 1939 and 03 Nov 1939. From her attestation papers held in the National Archives of Australia*, we know that Gladys enlisted in the Australian Armed Forces on 04 Dec 1941 and was taken on strength to the Australian Army Nursing Service in Brisbane on 10 Feb 1942. Her first posting was to the 112 Australian General Hospital in Brisbane on 10 Feb 1942. Apart from Brisbane, Gladys served at the 116 Australian General Hospital in Charters Towers from May 1943 until Dec 1944. Gladys married a serviceman, Cyril John Pidgeon, on 30 Oct 1944 but continued to serve in Brisbane Military hospitals until the end of her service on 25 Jun 1945. During her AANS service, Gladys was promoted from Staff Nurse to Sister on 10 Feb 1942 and Lieutenant on 23 Mar 1943.
